Engineers from across the Eastern Riverina have put together a mid-year professional development opportunity and options package for university students studying engineering.

  • Design your engineering experience, e.g., water infrastructure, airports, roads, GPS surveying, quarries, civic design…

  • Choose one or more Eastern Riverina locations

  • Choose one or more days: July 5, 6, 7, 12 and 13

  • No cost

  • Support for students from outside of the Riverina

  • Limited places

Expressing Interest is Easy

Choose from the following information the experience/days/locations you are interested in and submit to Paul Worsfold via email (paulworsfold@riverinajo.nsw.gov.au) by or before June 24.

Your email to include your (1) choices (one or more days), (2) name, (3) course of study, and (4) best contact phone number. You may also indicate if you would like a phone call to discuss any issues surrounding travel arrangements.

July 5 – Goldenfields Water County Council (Temora and District)

  • Introduction to water engineering

  • Visit the Jugiong water treatment plant

  • Presentation of conventional treatment of surface water from a river off-take

  • Jar testing activity: determining dosing amounts

  • Discussion on construction methods

  • Overview of contract management

July 6 – Temora Shire Council

  • Overview of GPS machine control process (GPS survey, CAD design, machine setup and operation)

  • Tour of $4.5m airport upgrade

  • Overview of Council works for the NSW Government, Transport for NSW: work on the state-owned classified roads

  • Introduction to community recycled water systems

  • Engineering roles within local government

  • Tour of Council projects (Gravel re-sheeting, road widening and bridge sized culvert structure)

July 7 – Bland Shire Council

  • Director of Technical Services leads a tour of treatment works, landfill and flood-damaged roads within the Shire

  • Design Engineering. Discussion and presentations by Bland Shire Council’s Design Engineer will explain the design role and how it impacts town planning and development

July 12 – Coolamon Shire Council

  • Overview of Council’s Engineering positions. Each speaker will introduce their specific role, the Council assets they manage and discuss current projects (water and sewer assets, construction projects, etc.)

  • Presentation on Civic Design

  • A tour by the Works Engineer of current construction developments: Coolamon Business Park (including an overview of subdivision drainage); gravel quarries (including crushing and grading scales of gravel); and the new sewer reticulation facility and its sewer ponds

July 13 – Greater Hume Council

  • Accompanying Greater Hume Council’s Works Engineer and Cadet Engineer, introducing and detailing current projects:

    • An ‘all abilities’ viewing platform in the Woomargama National Park

    • Bridge replacement due to flood damage

    • General construction projects including footpath and drainage construction

    • Sub-division construction works. Greater Hume is one of the very few local Councils that do their own sub-division work, i.e., both developer and regulatory authority

  • ‘Insight into local government engineering”. Session led by the Director of Engineering

  • Overview of Council’s Engineering positions. Each speaker will introduce their specific role, the Council assets they manage and discuss associated projects (water and sewer assets, construction projects, etc.)
